# Edit and publish a model

> Change an attribution model in a draft, with Atlas or the manual editor, review the changes, then publish them.

Every change to an attribution model happens in a draft, so nobody else sees it, and nothing that depends on the model moves, until you publish. You can build the draft by describing what you want to Atlas, by editing nodes yourself, or both.

## Open the editor

1. Open **Attribution** and choose a model from **Attribution Models**.
2. Select the edit icon in the toolbar.

The editor opens with the model name and a **DRAFT** badge. The canvas on the left is a **Live preview** of the draft, the panel on the right holds node details, and the Atlas panel sits alongside.

| Control | What it does |
| :- | :- |
| **Atlas AI** / **Manual Editor** | Switch between editing in chat and editing by hand |
| Undo and redo | Step backwards and forwards through changes in this draft, including changes Atlas made |
| More actions | **Discard draft** throws away every unpublished change |
| **Publish** | Review the draft's changes and make them live |

## Edit with Atlas

With **Atlas AI** selected, describe the change in plain language, for example "Add a node for production and attribute AmazonEC2 to it", or pick one of the suggested prompts. Atlas shows each step it takes, applies the changes to the draft, and the live preview refreshes as it works.

Atlas only changes the draft. Review what it did on the canvas, use undo to reverse anything you do not want, and publish when you are satisfied. See [Atlas](https://docs.optimazehq.com/atlas.md) for what else it can do.

## Edit by hand

Select **Manual Editor**, then select a node to open **Edit Attributes**.

| Field or control | What it does |
| :- | :- |
| **Name** | The node name shown on the canvas and in reports |
| **Owner** | The person accountable for the node's spend |
| **Insert Parent** | Add a node above the selected node |
| **Add Child** | Add a node beneath the selected node |
| **Add sub-model** | Create a sub-model linked to this node |

Use **Toggle Edit View** in the side rail to switch the editing view, and **Showbacks** to manage how shared cost is distributed (see [Showbacks](https://docs.optimazehq.com/attribution/showbacks.md)).

## Add a sub-model

A sub-model lets a team own and edit part of the Financial Operating Model separately, while its spend still rolls up to the parent.

1. In the editor, select the node the sub-model should hang from.
2. Select **Add sub-model** in **Edit Attributes**.
3. Name the sub-model and publish the draft.

A sub-model's scope is bounded by its parent, it cannot draw in spend from providers the parent does not cover. Budgets and goals can be set on sub-models as well as on the parent. If a sub-model's budget envelope is larger than its parent's, OPTIMAZE warns you but still saves it.

## Publish

1. Select **Publish**.
2. Review the summary of changes in the confirmation.
3. Confirm to make the draft live.

If your changes remove nodes that budgets or goals depend on, the confirmation lists them, and publishing archives those budgets and goals. Check the list before you confirm.

## Delete an ad-hoc model

Open the ad-hoc model in the editor, open the more actions menu and choose delete. The Financial Operating Model cannot be deleted.

## Troubleshooting

* **The edit icon has an orange dot.** Someone has an unpublished draft open on this model. Hover the icon to see who changed it last before you continue.
* **Atlas made a change I did not want.** Use undo, or discard the draft and start again.
* **I cannot delete a node.** A node linked to other objects may be blocked from deletion, the error names what is linked to it.
